Air Fryer vs Convection Oven: Which Do I Prefer?

When it comes to choosing between an air fryer and a convection oven, it really just depends on your cooking preferences and needs! Both appliances utilize hot air and heating elements to cook food, but there are key differences in size, capacity, and cooking methods that you should consider. In this blog post, I will delve into these factors and share my personal preference. Keep reading to find out which one I prefer: the air fryer or the convection oven?

What Is a Convection Oven?

Think of a convection oven as a regular oven but with a superpower! It has a small fan at the back of the oven that helps circulate hot air all around your food while it cooks. This circulating air cooks your food faster and more evenly than a regular oven, giving you deliciously crispy results. So, if you're baking cookies or roasting veggies, a convection oven can be your kitchen bestie, making sure everything cooks up perfectly without you having to worry too much about uneven cooking or long wait times. It's like having a cooking buddy that always has your back! It cooks a bit faster than a regular “bake” option on your standard oven!

What Is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is like a magical kitchen gadget that makes your favorite foods healthier and easier to cook without the use of excess oil. Instead of dunking your food in a ton of oil like you would with deep frying, an air fryer uses hot air to crisp up your food. It's kind of like a mini convection oven, but it works super fast and makes things extra crispy without all the oil. So, whether you're craving crispy french fries, crunchy chicken wings, or even some tasty veggies, an air fryer can help you whip them up quickly and with less guilt about the grease. It's like having a little kitchen wizard that makes your favorite fried treats a little bit better for you!

Why I Prefer the Air Fryer Over the Convection Oven:

Size

Air fryers are typically smaller and more compact compared to a conventional oven, making them easier to store and transport or store in a pantry if you’re not using it! They're designed to be compact and portable, making them perfect for small kitchens or for those who prefer kitchen appliances that don't take up much space.

Speed

Air fryers generally have a faster cooking process compared to convection ovens due to their smaller size and the concentrated dry heat produced by the rapid air circulation. This means that you can enjoy your favorite crispy dishes in less time. French fries, chicken wings, chicken tenders, you name it! An air fryer can deliver delicious results in a fraction of the time it would take in a convection oven.

Energy efficient

Air fryers typically consume less energy than convection ovens due to their smaller size and quicker cooking times, potentially resulting in less energy use! This makes them a more environmentally friendly option for those who are conscious about their usage of energy.

Easy To Use

Air fryers often come with pre-programmed settings and simple controls, making them user-friendly even for those who are not experienced in cooking. Pre-programmed settings for popular dishes like french fries or chicken wings take the guesswork out of cooking times and temperatures.

Crispy food

Air fryers are known for producing an exceptionally crispy exterior and evenly cooked food, thanks to the circulating hot air that surrounds the food from all angles, mimicking the effects of deep frying without the need for excessive oil.

Versatile

While both appliances can roast, bake, and broil, air fryers are specifically designed for air frying, giving them an edge in producing crispy, fried-like textures with less oil. They may also come with accessories such as racks to increase their versatility.

Easy Cleanup

Some air fryers often have a non-stick air fryer basket or tray that is easy to clean, requiring minimal effort compared to cleaning large convection ovens with multiple oven racks and trays. Simply remove the basket or tray from the air fryer, give it a quick wash with warm soapy water, and it's ready to use again!

FAQ

Air fryers stand out as the superior choice for several reasons. While both appliances utilize hot air and built-in convection fans for cooking at higher temperatures, air fryers outperform in providing a crispy texture with minimal oil. Their compact size, versatility in cooking methods, and ease of use make them popular choices for everyday cooking. Whether it's a standalone air fryer or a miniature convection oven, the convenience and quality of cooking that air fryers provide outweigh those of convection ovens in my honest opinion!
